A14 bypass improvements

Upgrade of the vital route in East of England

Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, has announced that Highways England, together with the Government, has committed up to £1.5 billion to upgrade the vital route in the East of England. The scheme will help to connect communities and develop growth by providing extra capacity to the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon. This additional capacity aims to improve journey times and safety for all users, ranging from local residents and businesses to national and international transport companies.

The scheme includes a major new bypass to the south of Huntingdon, widening part of the existing A14 between Swavesey and Girton, widening part of the A14 Cambridge northern bypass, widening a section of the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury, and demolishing the A14 viaduct at Huntingdon.

The construction work will start in late 2016, and the new bypass and widened A14 will hopefully be opened to traffic in 2020. It is likely to take more time to remove the A14 viaduct in Huntingdon.
